Did you know that 50 million Americans won’t know where their next meal is coming from at some point in the next year?  That is one in six Americans!  Think of six people that you know, in your community and one of them could possibly experience hunger in the next year.  September is Hunger Action Month and Walmart is teaming up with customers, suppliers and associates to donate up to 53 million meals to Feeding America and give $2.5 million in hunger relief.

Through October 12th, you can help supply meals to Feeding America by purchasing select products from participating companies at Walmart stores and following the directions on the packaging.  You can also help by checking out the “Give Meals” section at www.walmart.com/hunger or by using a mobile app to generate meal donations for Feeding America.

Walmart also has something called the Golden Spark promotion.  When you help Walmart donate meals, you will also be entered for a chance to win $50,000 for your community!  40 people will randomly chosen as “Golden Sparks” and get to chose a community to receive the $50,000.  The chosen community will be able to start or expand a backpack program that gives kids meals for the weekends when they don’t have access to free or reduced lunches in their school.

My daughter goes to a school that is considered low-income.  A lot of the kids do get reduced or free lunches.  The thought of any of these kids not having enough food to eat when they go home is heart-breaking!  The burden their parents must go through every day, trying to do what is best for their kids…I can’t even imagine!  If we as a community can help these families get meals on their tables, I think that is a wonderful thing!

One way we can go about Fighting Hunger Together, is by going to Walmart’s website, clicking on the blue tab that says Sercuring Meals & then clicking the yellow button that says the same thing.  That will take you to an app called Jingit.  What you can do here is watch a video or take a survey about a product, say Cheerios, and after this is completed, the app will let you know that you have secured a meal.  You can also download the Jingit app, check in when you visit Walmart and meals are secured that way as well.  When you do go to Walmart, make sure you find the “Fighting Hunger Together” signs on General Mills, Kellogs, Unilever, Kraft Foods and  ConAgra Food products.  If we all work together, we can bring hunger relief to so many Americans.

Have you or someone close to you experienced hunger like this?  Or, have you helped someone in a situation similar to this?  By sharing these stories, we’ll be able to see how prevalent this issue is.  I hope you will all join Walmart and all these wonderful companies in bringing an end to hunger in America!

  6. I was a single mom for 5 years, and never received child support. I worked my butt off to make ends meet and still didn’t know where our meals were going to come from sometimes. Things always worked out but it would have been so nice to have a program like this back then. I love helping others in need, especially where food is concerned. I had a generous neighbor who was a single woman. She would go to Winn-Dixie and buy BOGO foods and give me her “Free” food. It was SO, SO sweet. Being able to help other people like that is awesome.

I wish our country focused more on domestic issues like hunger, as opposed to hunger and poverty in other countries.

  9. I love that Wal-Mart is doing this. They’re a HUUUUUUGE corporation and they definitely need to be helping out! I love shopping there, it’s a one-stop-shop, and now I have even more reason to. :) What a great cause. I volunteer at the St. Louis Area Foodbank and it’s so nice to see the companies that help out. Glad Wal-Mart is jumping on!
