Not too long ago, my daughter and I found a book series that we both liked, that was appropriate for a 12 year old to read and didn’t leave me bored out of my mind. But I have to say, that finding a series, or even a book, like that is rare. My daughter loves reading and I love that about her but she’s at an age where finding a book that interests her and isn’t either too young or has mature themes, is a rarity.
When we were asked to read and review The Selection by Kiera Cass, we couldn’t wait to get it in the mail! I was excited to read a book at the same time as her so we could discuss it and she was excited for the same reasons. We’re the only girls in the house so when we found the series that we both liked, we really enjoyed talking about the characters and situations in the books in front of the boys and watching them have no idea what we were talking about!
The Selection is the story of 35 girls who are vying for a chance to live in a palace and compete for the heart of Prince Maxon. In this dystopian story, America Singer is already in love with someone who is in a caste below her and she really doesn’t even want the life of a princess. She will have to leave everything she knows behind to compete in The Selection. That has to be a scary thing for a teenage girl (or for anyone for that matter). Will the plans she’s had for her life, still be the things that she wants after this is all over with? If you love dystopian stories, like so many of the popular books & movies these days, then you’ll definitely want to check out The Selection.
There are a few things I really love about these books. First, they all range from 350-375 pages. This is a great length for my daughter and I to read together…not too little, not too much. Second, I liked that there was enough romance in the story (because what would a princess story be without a little romance, right?) but nothing inappropriate like so many books I see in the YA category. Third, they are just really fun reads! A lot of times when I’m reading, I like fun, light reads and these are definitely fitting the bill!
If you’re like me and love reading a book series, you’ll be happy to know that after The Selection, you can then read The Elite, The One and The Heir (which is coming out on My 5th, 2015). I always hate waiting months and months for a new book in a series to come out but you won’t have to. I think once you start reading this series, you’ll love it & want to buy or download the next book as soon as possible!
