I received a copy of the book Tatted Mom’s Guide to NOT Screwing Up Your Kids for this review. All opinions are 100% honest & my own.
When I was pregnant 15 years ago with my oldest son, I read a parenting book or two but honestly, most of them drove me nuts. They either bored me half to death or their “advice” was pretty moronic. Jared, my oldest, was pretty much the ideal baby & child. He had some of the typical Terrible Twos & Threes but nothing I couldn’t handle. When I was pregnant with my daughter three years later, I thought I had it all taken care of. I thought she would be a perfect sleeper like her older brother and everything would be smooth. I was very wrong. My daughter wasn’t like her brother at all & I quickly learned that two kids, no matter if they share the same DNA, will never be exactly the same, no matter what we as parents do (or don’t do). Those parenting books certainly wouldn’t have helped me with her!
Then, my youngest was born 5 1/2 years ago. God love him! He has been trying my patience (and turning my hair gray) from the minute he was born. None of the things in the parenting books (besides special needs books which I am now getting into with him) would have helped at all.
When I was asked to review Morgan Moss’ Tatted Mom’s Guide to NOT Screwing Up Your Kids: Colorful Parenting Tips from a Colorful Mother, I was intrigued. Morgan writes a blog that I have been reading for a little bit now and I see a lot of the stuff she writes on Facebook and I almost always find myself cracking up at the things she says. I thought if nothing else, I’d get a good laugh from the things she said in the book. What I found though was a lot of parenting advice that made sense with parenting humor thrown in. Morgan isn’t afraid to share the things that she did wrong & point out she isn’t a perfect parent. For me, I want to see flawed people in books & in the blogs I read. Seeing perfect people and their perfect lives just doesn’t resonate with me because I know I am NOT like that. Humor & honesty is the way to go!

Tatted Mom’s Guide to NOT Screwing Up Your Kids includes:
- The myths that mainstream parenting books tell you, and how they don’t apply to every mother.
- How to deal with temper tantrums from toddlers to tweens.
- How to “win” the various battles you will have with your children (like the Personal Hygiene Battle and the Clothing Battle)
- Tips on dealing with picky eaters and the difficult potty trainee.
- Helping build your tween’s self esteem and creating a strong family unit.
- Motherly advice on parenting from birth until the tweenaged years (around 12 years old)
- Mom Competition, unplugging your kids, chores, peer pressure and more!
I had the book with me in the van to read when we were waiting at school pickup for my youngest son & my daughter (who is 11 now) picked it up & started reading it. She was cracking up at a lot of what was said (however, she hasn’t seen the tween part yet. Maybe I won’t let her see that & keep my tricks to myself!) and she loved reading the Ink Spots, which are funny stories, helpful tips & useful tricks from other moms and dads on their own journeys. I personally liked how easy the book was to read. It was easy to read a little bit, put it down to make dinner or go to bed, then come back later & start reading again without missing a beat.
