When my 13 year old son told us he wanted to go to his Halloween school dance, we were pretty surprised. He usually doesn’t like those sort of things and also since he’s been homeschooled on & off over the years, he really hasn’t had much opportunity for junior high dances. Then, came the dilemma of what Jared wanted to dress as. He said he wanted to be a “Gentleman Ghost” (basically a suit with white face paint lol).
We went and bought a suit at the Goodwill ($17 total for a nice suit jacket, black pants & a long sleeve white shirt). We had trouble finding him any kind of top hat or a cane that didn’t cost $20! We then decided to make him a Zombie Businessman…Hey, when the Zombie Apocalypse happens, there are going to be zombie businessmen, zombie cheerleaders, even zombie mommies pushing baby strollers (I feel like one of those already!)
I grabbed a box cutter & went to work on the suit jacket, ripping out seams, popping off buttons & slashing the heck out of it. It was actually a lot of fun! Then, we rubbed our hands in a bunch of flour and went to work on the pants and jacket. My husband decided to get some ash from the fireplace & rub it on Jared’s white shirt.
I’m not thrilled with how his white face makeup came out but I’ll probably pick up some new face makeup before Halloween. It was really streaky & clumpy no matter what I did. His eyes & around his mouth just needed some black/dark brown eyeshadow that I already had.
I think he turned out pretty good & with the white makeup, we only spent $20 on his costume. Plus, we didn’t cut up the pants at all, so he can keep those in case he ever needs “fancy pants”!
So, how do you think we did for $20?
