At almost 40 years old, the only time in my life when I had a brand new bed & mattress was when I was about 3 years old. I remember getting my bed (I think it was a queen but it felt like the biggest bed ever at that age), matching dresser and desk at a local furniture store. My bed even had a canopy & I remember thinking that I was such a big kid for having all of this great furniture.
That bed lasted me until I was close to being a teenager and then after that, I’ve never had a new bed or mattress. Whenever I would visit a hotel, I would feel how comfortable their mattresses were & knew that one day, I just HAD to have one of my own. In my own bed, I would wake up every morning with a sore neck, aches in my back and pains in my hips. A lot of times, I just thought I was getting older and that came with the territory.
Then I got an email from Otterbed, asking if I wanted to try out their “luxury mattress with a funny name” and of course I said, “YES!” I was excited to see what the fuss was all about and to see if the aches & pains I felt every morning were just from me getting older or from an uncomfortable mattress.
The Otterbed mattress is made from several comfort and support layers:
- Elevate™ micro-cell cooling foam featuring supportive air technology (superior to memory foam) – perfect for the HOT summers we have here!
- Individually-wrapped independent coil springs for support and movement isolation – the mattress doesn’t move when you or your partner roll over
- Luxurious bamboo/blend cover
Otterbed is also 95% efficient in using raw products, plus they reuse and recycle material that normally is discarded in the construction of traditional mattresses.
Our Otterbed mattress arrived rolled up in a box and that was the most interesting thing to me. How on Earth could a king-sized mattress be in THAT box? After getting it into our bedroom and opening the box, we found a cutting tool that came with the mattress. We laid the mattress on our box springs & unrolled it as much as we could, then used the Otterbed cutter to cut the plastic off. Watching the mattress instantly start to expand was a lot of fun! Within about 30 minutes, the mattress was fully expanded and we tested it out.
At first, my fiancée Delia, was worried that the mattress was going to be too soft. She prefers a firmer mattress than I do. But, from the first night that we’ve slept on the new mattress, we’ve both woken up feeling refreshed and not in pain like we did with our old mattress. Recently, we stayed at a family member’s house and as soon as we laid down in their bed, we both could tell a major difference. My hips instantly felt so much pressure and it was hard to get a good night’s sleep. When one of us would roll over to try to get comfortable, the other one would be woken up because the mattress moved so much. Coming back to our comfortable Otterbed mattress was such a welcome relief!
For every Otterbed that is purchased, a donation is made to 1% for the Planet. This organization supports programs that help to protect the earth. Otterbed’s donation goes towards otter restoration programs at non-profit organizations and aquariums along the west coast.
If you’re looking for a new mattress, I highly recommend Otterbed. Each mattress comes with a 10-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
