Bringing Video Games and Books Together with BattleKasters (Plus a Free San Diego Comic-Con Event)

Everyone in my family is a gamer of one level or another. We all love video games and are self-described nerds and geeks. Obviously as a mom, I keep an eye on what they play and anything that can tie in education with video games is always going to catch my attention and make me want to learn more. When I heard about a mobile game called BattleKasters that was based on a book series, I knew it was something we had to check out.

BattleKasters is a downloadable mobile game that is based on the award-winning, young adult book series, Legends of Orkney, by author Alane Adams. This literacy-charged gaming experience allows you to collect digital trading cards, cast spells and close the stonefire portal to protect Earth from dark magic. But, I think the coolest part is that the game turns live events into game boards and it’s coming to Comic-Con International: San Diego 2015.
Living in San Diego, Comic-Con is a huge deal here and something we hear about a lot. It’s all over the news, people go crazy trying to buy tickets and the convention center area is swarming with people in amazing costumes. On July 9th-12th, players in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter will have the chance to win $5000. The winner will get to keep $2500 and the other $2500 will go to a library of the winner’s choosing. So, not only can you play a fun game and explore the historic district in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter, you’ll also have a chance to win a great amount of money for you and your library!

Here’s the thing I love…you don’t have to have a ticket to Comic-Con to play this game! Not all of us were lucky enough to be able to get tickets but that doesn’t mean that we don’t want to join in on the fun! This is a family-friendly, offsite adventure that kids and adults of all ages will love to play. From July 9th – 12th, head on over to the Gaslamp Quarter Museum, which is serving as the game headquarters. At the museum, you’ll be able to buy copies of The Red Sun, the first book in the Legends of Orkney series, with proceeds going to the Gaslamp Foundation and literacy causes.
