There’s something special about gardening…the first sight of green as the seed sprouts, the first flower that blooms on your plant or even the first time you’re able to harvest fruits or vegetables that you planted yourself. Even though I’m not the best gardener in the world, I still want my kids to experience what it’s like to plant something, take care of it and watch your hard work pay off when it grows. And also, despite all your hard work and effort, sometimes that plant just doesn’t cooperate and turn into something beautiful but that’s ok, too. It’s a good lesson for all of us to learn.
We don’t have a lot of space for growing a garden (we rent so we can’t dig up the plants that are here and we can’t add planter boxes according to the HOA rules) so we’ve decided to get creative with our garden. There are a couple ways to still grow a garden in a small area, though. First, you can plan to grow your own herbs because that doesn’t take up a lot of space. Even if you live in an apartment or have little to no yard, you can place a few pots inside your kitchen, on your patio or balcony and enjoy your fresh herbs whenever you need them. This is a great way for kids to start a garden too! There are lots of great herbs that your kids could grow for themselves!
My daughter and I decided we wanted to grow a little garden that we could move around depending on where the light in our home was and be able to take it to the kitchen to water the plants. We bought the little plants at Target. The small ones were $1 a piece & come with a compostable planter, the seeds and the soil. We decided to plant 2 strawberry plants, 1 tomato, 1 green pepper, 1 poppy flower plant and a bigger carrot plant (about $3-4).
Here are some great tips from other bloggers that will help you to get the garden you want even if you don’t have a lot of space!

Gardening is so darn hard in Arizona. I have learned that a garden in my bathroom is really the best! LOL
I remember pressing flowers when I was younger, but the one that I have wanted to try for awhile is dying eggs naturally. I just can’t wrap my head around that! I think that will be my goal for next year!
Tara says
Oh, I bet Leila! That’s gotta be hard (I wouldn’t last in Arizona very long lol)

When I was a child, one of my favorite things to do was to press flowers with my mom and grandmother so I would love to do this with my child which would bring back some wonderful memories. I still have most of my dried, pressed flowers to this day.

So much fun, Paula! That’s something I actually haven’t tried with my kids but I know my daughter would love it!
